How To Choose Your Baratza Grinder

I have been evangelizing the benefits of grinding your beans each time you brew your coffee for years now. Many of you have heard me say that, no matter what system you use to brew your coffee, you can improve the quality of that coffee with two easy steps:

  1. Use freshly roasted coffee. The reason for this, not surprisingly, is that coffee goes stale over time. And, as with all food products, stale does not taste as good as fresh.

  2. Grind before each brew. This improves the results no matter what brewing method you are using. The reasons are two-fold:

    1. As soon as you grind beans the volatile aromas and flavors and oils that give that coffee it’s flavor characteristics start to degrade.

    2. The grind size of your pre-ground coffee may not be optimal for your preferred brewing method. Simple put, a grind which works well in an automatic drip coffee machine will not produce the best results in a french press. And vice versa.

We carry a number of grinders in our store, but we are particularly fond of the Baratza grinders. This line of high end grinders offers some great options. But they have so many different models that it can be confusing. Well, the good people at Baratza have produced a video that explains the differences between the models and why you might choose one over another. Check it out below.
