Foolproof Way To Make Crispy Tofu

I don’t know about you - but when I am working on a recipe that calls for tofu to be fried in the pan until crispy I can never get that to work. The tofu falls apart in the pan and never gets crispy on all sides. It is usually a mess - at least for me. But…I have found the solution:

Bake it in the oven.

Yes…the solution to crispy crunchy fried tofu is to bake them. Who knew.

So here is the technique I used last night to make crispy tofu to add to my Rogan Josh spice packet. The recipe on the packet called for lamb - but I wanted to make this with tofu instead. I used the technique below and added the tofu to the Rogan Josh recipe. It was delicious.

Try this the next time you are making a stir-fry - or any other recipe where you are using tofu. Like the title says - it is foolproof.

Foolproof Crispy Tofu

Ingredients

  • one package of extra firm tofu

  • 1 T soy sauce

  • 1 T neutral oil

  • 1 T cornstarch

Preparation

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees

Press the tofu on some paper towels to remove excess moisture using a weight such as a cast iron skillet or some books. 15 minutes should do fine.

Cut the tofu into whatever size you will be using in your recipe and place in a bowl. Add the soy sauce, oil, and cornstarch and mix together.

Place the tofu on a sheet pan and bake for 30 minutes. Turn the pieces over after 15 minutes to brown evenly.

Pull the pan from the oven and the tofu is ready to use.
